A Manifesto to be Proud Of

9.40.55pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 14th Apr 2005

The Liberal Democrat candidate for Crosby constituency, Jim Murray, says he is proud of his party's General Election manifesto launched this morning.

"We are offering a real alternative, based on the principles of freedom, fairness, trust and concern for the environment," he said.

"We will free doctors and nurses from Whitehall imposed targets, giving local hospitals the time and flexibility to put patients first."

"We will replace the unfair Council Tax with a local income tax that more truly reflects people's ability to pay."

"We will seek to restore trust in government by curtailing the personal power of the Prime Minister and, wherever possible, taking power away from central government and handing it back to local communities."

Murray also drew attention to another feature of the Liberal Democrat manifesto. "It shows that Charles Kennedy is supported by a team of talented party spokesmen and women. This reflects our growing strength as a party. There are now three big parties in British politics. This is true in Crosby as much as anywhere else. The Liberal Democrats have three times as many council seats in this constituency as Labour."
