Scrap the Unfair Council Tax

3.38.06pm GMT Sun 13th Nov 2005

Liberal Democrat councillors in Crosby, Waterloo and Seaforth have renewed their call for the unfair Council Tax to be abolished.

Victoria Ward Lib Dem Councillor Anthony Hill is calling on the Government to stop stalling and be decisive in scrapping the Council Tax and replacing it with a local income tax based on the ability to pay.

Anthony Hill said, "The Government is putting off re-banding of Council Tax Bands until a later date and not taking action to address the unfair way that Council Tax is hurting the poorest in our society. Many pensioners and low paid workers are already struggling to make ends meet. When Council Tax rises again next year, on top of gas, electricity and water charges that have all risen well above the inflation rate, many pensioners and low wage earners will be hardest hit again."
